Did you know that watermelon is actually 92% water? That is basically a drink disguised as a fruit! Native to West Africa and cultivated for thousands of years, watermelon has travelled the world and is now one of the most popular fruits on the planet, enjoyed in over 100 countries. Every part of it is edible, including the rind and seeds, which are packed with nutrients.

Watermelon is also naturally rich in electrolytes like potassium, making it one of the best foods for staying hydrated on a hot summer day. And here is our favourite fun fact for the kids: in Japan, farmers grow perfectly square watermelons by placing them in square moulds while they are still on the vine! Now that is one fruit with a few tricks up its sleeve.

FAQ

How to choose the perfect watermelon?

If you want to choose the sweetest and juiciest watermelon, always look out for a big yellowish spot on your green watermelon. This means perfection!

How can you make it ultra cold on a hot summer day?

Freeze your watermelon cubes for 30 minutes before blending them. This way, you’ll get a guaranteed brain freeze!

Why add salt?

A simple pinch goes a long way, as salt binds the whole flavour together!

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

This watermelon punch is best enjoyed fresh, but it keeps beautifully in a sealed jar or pitcher in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just give it a good stir before serving, as it may separate slightly. Made too much? Simply pour the leftovers into ice cube trays and freeze for later. When you are ready, toss the frozen cubes straight into the blender for an instant watermelon slushie that tastes just as fresh.

  • 150 ml coconut water
  • salt

Instructions

  • Cut the watermelon into cubes (freeze for 30 minutes if you want extra cold).

Notes

Make it extra refreshing: Add a handful of ice cubes directly to the blender for a slushie-style texture, or serve over crushed ice for a gorgeous frosty presentation that kids absolutely love.
Fun mocktail moment: Dress it up for a party by serving in pretty glasses with colourful straws, a lime wheel on the rim, and a skewer of gummy bears on top. The kids will feel like they are sipping something truly special!
Sweetness tip: Watermelons vary in sweetness depending on the season. If yours is not as sweet as you would like, add a small drizzle of honey or maple syrup to taste rather than refined sugar for a more natural touch.
Strain it smooth: For a silkier, juice-like texture rather than a blended smoothie consistency, simply pour through a fine mesh strainer after blending. Perfect for younger kids who prefer a thinner drink.
