Puff Pastry Pinwheels are an easy and fast little bites to prepare with a fantastic aroma! The roll-ups are filled with tender garlic, thyme-infused butter, and mature cheddar cheese to make a bursting-with-flavour bite to bring to a picnic, outdoor event, or simple snack.

Tender Garlic Puff Pastry Pinwheels

These Tender Garlic Puff Pastry Pinwheels are so easy and aromatic. However, tender garlic tastes milder than actual garlic, making space for the thyme and cheese to come through. They are a great simple appetizer or snack to bring to any event or to give to the kids by the side of the pool. Their textures are flaky yet still smooth because of the cheese.

What is Tender Garlic?

They look like slightly thicker scallions but taste stronger, although not as strong as a garlic clove. This little-known veggie is garlic sprouts collected before its bulb formed. They have a strong aroma but a gentler taste, and eating them raw in a sauce, salad or else is common. Some people have difficulty digesting garlic, so these are a great alternative! They are easier on the stomach and give any dish this fantastic aroma and colour. If you see green on a slice of garlic bread, it’s them! They do not give a bad breath like raw garlic, so if you want all the aroma but not the aftertaste, tender garlic is the way to go.

Thyme and Cheese

I believe fresh thyme should be in everyone’s kitchen at all times. It goes with everything, including any protein, and it’s not overwhelming like other aromatic herbs. Plus, paired with cheese, it becomes a dangerously delicious pair! So, for these pinwheels, I’ve used them to give another fun dimension to the appetizers. I wanted a slight cheese melt without being too stringy or cheezy. So I’ve used my favourite, aged cheddar, which did wonderfully.

Alternative

This Puff Pastry Pinwheels recipe is easily adaptable to your preferences. You don’t dig thyme? Well, switch it up to lovely rosemary or omit it. As for the cheese, it’s the same thing. Add the cheese you prefer here, although I propose something aged because you want to taste this cheese but not get the stringy effect. Parmesan, Gruyere, or any aged cow milk cheese could be used.

Storage

This Garlic Puff Pastry recipe is fast and easy, but if you want to save time, you can freeze the uncooked rolls until needed or pop a few in the Air fryer or oven when the kids need a snack. But once cooked, it’s like a croissant; the texture will change, harden over time, and won’t stay as nice. So you can keep them on the day at room temperature, but past that, they become a rock and lose their flakiness.
