Mango Lassi with Coconut Milk (Refined Sugar-Free)

This tropical mango coconut lassi combines rich coconut milk and thick Greek yogurt for the ultimate creamy summer drink. Blend, chill, and serve a summer treat.

Two glasses of creamy mango coco lassi garnished with fresh mint and colorful paper straws, served on a white wood table with fresh mangoes in the background.

If you love the classic Indian mango lassi, this version will become your new warm-weather obsession. We swapped regular milk for rich coconut milk to add an extra layer of tropical flavour, while keeping all that classic creaminess with thick Greek yogurt. A touch of maple syrup replaces refined sugar for a more natural, subtle sweetness, and a pinch of turmeric gives it that gorgeous golden glow; plus a quiet little health boost that nobody will even notice. Just blend, chill, and sip your way through summer.

A Little Sip of History

Lassi is one of the world’s oldest known smoothies, with roots stretching back over 1,000 years to the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. Traditionally made by blending yogurt with water, spices, or fruit, it was originally drunk as a practical, cooling antidote to the intense summer heat. It comes in two main camps: sweet (meethi lassi), often flavoured with mango or rose water, and salty (namkeen lassi), seasoned with cumin and a pinch of salt, which might sound strange but is surprisingly refreshing.

Picking the Right Mango

Not all mangoes are created equal; there are varieties out there with triple the sweetness and depth of flavour compared to your average supermarket find (like Alphonso, Ataulfo, and Kesar), though they’re not always easy to track down in the western world. So for this recipe, and to keep things simple for busy parents, I use plain frozen mango: it’s affordable, available year-round, and it makes your lassi extra thick and cold. That said, if you happen to have a really good fresh mango on hand, it’s absolutely worth using.

The Flavours That Make a Lassi Sing

Traditional mango lassi is a beautifully fragrant drink, and the spices and aromatics used to flavour it are a big part of its charm.

  • Cardamom is perhaps the most classic addition; just a pinch of this warm, floral spice adds a lovely depth that pairs perfectly with mango.
  • Saffron is another traditional favourite, steeped in a little warm water and stirred in for a gorgeous golden hue and a delicate, almost honeyed aroma.
  • A touch of rose water is also widely loved, lending a subtle floral sweetness that feels wonderfully exotic without being overpowering.

For my version, I skip the saffron and reach for turmeric powder instead; it gives the lassi that same beautiful golden colour, costs a fraction of the price, and here’s the best part: you absolutely cannot taste it. It’s completely optional, but I love adding it for that extra sunny glow and the quiet health boost it brings to the glass.

Storage & Make-Ahead Tips

The good news is that this lassi is incredibly easy to make ahead; in fact, it might taste even better after a little time in the fridge. Simply blend everything together, pour it into a sealed jar or pitcher, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Since we’re using frozen mango, you can skip the ice cubes entirely and let it thaw in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving. Give it a good stir or a quick shake before pouring, as it can settle slightly.

If by some miracle you have leftovers, pour them straight into popsicle moulds and freeze them for the most delicious mango-coconut popsicles.
