Alcohol-Free Mandarin Coquito

This Alcohol-Free Mandarin Coquito is a fun, citrusy twist on the classic! Creamy coconut meets sweet mandarin for a festive drink the whole family can enjoy.

Alcohol-Free Mandarin Coquito

This creamy, spiced mandarin milk is a delightful fusion of Puerto Rican Coquito, Brazilian Lemonade, and classic eggnog. This Alcohol-Free Mandarin Coquito is infused with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and a splash of mandarin. The flavours create a warm, festive blend that is perfect for the holiday season. Smooth, sweet, and citrusy, it’s an easy, family-friendly drink that brings a little holiday magic to every sip.

Ultra Smooth

Alcohol-Free Mandarin Coquito is silky smooth, thanks to its main ingredient: condensed milk, a thickened milk often used in desserts. If you want it cold, put the condensed milk in the fridge before using it. Blending the ingredients will make it foamy, and you’ll see the spices move around in this white, milky pool of heaven. So fun! But don’t forget to serve it with a cinnamon stick or a straw to mix it up properly before drinking.

Condensed Vs. Evaporated Milk

Both of these milks come in a can and have a thicker texture than regular milk. They both go through an evaporation process, which removes most of the water, giving them a lovely creamy texture. The main difference between these two is that condensed milk is sweetened, while evaporated milk is not. So, depending on whether you have a sweet tooth or not, you can adjust the drink by adding more or one than the other.

Traditional Coquito

The traditional coquito is a cherished Puerto Rican holiday drink that embodies the season’s festive spirit. It’s often compared to eggnog for its texture, but it’s made with coconut milk, cream and sweetened condensed milk instead of eggs. The classic version also includes rum, giving it a warm, festive kick. It’s a cherished tradition that brings family and friends together.

Mandarin

The holiday season signals the end of mandarin season—a favourite in our house, especially with the kids! To make this drink even more festive, I love adding a splash of tangy mandarin. Its acidity perfectly balances out the sweetness, giving the coquito a refreshing twist. Like in Brazilian Lemonade (Limonada Suíça), the bright, citrusy flavour pairs surprisingly well with the rich condensed and coconut milk.

Serving

Coquito is from Puerto Rico, therefore the drink is served cold. If you plan to serve the drink immediately, add plenty of ice cubes to the blend for a refreshing chill. However, like most traditional recipes, this beverage benefits from a rest in the fridge to let the flavours meld. You can easily make it ahead of time – skip the ice until you’re ready to serve. When the moment comes, give the coquito a good shake or blend to mix everything correctly, then pour it over ice for a smooth, festive treat. This extra step gives the drink a lighter, more refreshing touch while keeping the flavours rich and balanced.

Variations

If you want to use your pumpkin spice blend, go ahead, or any of these spices would do wonders in this drink, depending on your preferences:

  • green cardamom (powder of the seeds)
  • vanilla
  • cloves
  • mace

As for the mandarin, you could use an orange instead.

The evaporated milk could be replaced with regular milk or almond milk.

Add some of your favourite rum (200ml-3/4 cup) to the mandarin coquito to make a grown-up version.
