These Hot Chocolate Christmas Balls are a fun treat to make with kids during the holiday season! Filled with cocoa powder, mini marshmallows, and colourful sprinkles inside clear ornament balls, they’re as delightful to create as they are to drink. Kids love helping assemble them, and they make the sweetest homemade gifts for teachers, neighbours, friends, or anyone who deserves a cozy treat. Drop one into a mug of hot milk, stir, and watch the marshmallows and sprinkles swirl into a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

A Fun Holiday Ritual for the Kids

You can totally turn this recipe into a family activity. I love preparing the Christmas balls with the kids, since layering the cocoa, marshmallows and sprinkles is such a fun little project. I always make a few extra and hang them in our Christmas tree so the kids can pick one each weekend and make their own cozy hot chocolate. The rest of the ornaments are packaged as sweet homemade gifts for friends and neighbours; they’re always a hit!

*If you’re making these as gifts, handle the ornaments gently so the layers stay neat and don’t mix.

Tips for Perfect Hot Chocolate Ornaments

  • Make sure they’re food-safe and large enough to hold a generous amount of hot chocolate mix, 7 cm diameter works best. Choose whether to use glass or a clear plastic.
  • Wash and dry the Christmas balls before filling them. Moisture causes clumping, so ensure they’re completely dry. I even use a hair dryer on low heat to evaporate any hidden droplets.
  • Use a small funnel to add the hot chocolate powder first. This helps pack the bottom layer evenly and prevents powder from sticking all over the sides.
  • If you give them away, attach a cute tag with instructions like “Drop into 1 cup of hot milk, stir, and enjoy!” so recipients know precisely how to use them.
  • Tie ribbons, add name tags, or attach small candy canes to the top for extra festive flair. These make the gifts feel more personalized and special.

Variations and Flavour Ideas

While classic hot chocolate is always a hit, you can easily customize these ornament balls with different flavours and mix-ins to suit everyone’s taste! Try peppermint hot chocolate by adding crushed candy canes or peppermint chips. For a more grown-up twist, add a pinch of cinnamon, cayenne pepper, or espresso powder to the cocoa mix. Get creative with the sprinkles, too. Use holiday-themed shapes, edible glitter, or even mini chocolate chips.
