Christmas Tree Appetizers

Christmas Tree Appetizers or Breakfast is a simple tower of star-shaped puff pastry, egg, ham and cheese layers. A great way to include a kid’s bite at the festive table!

Christmas Tree Appetizers are a breeze to make and easy to customize for any occasion. Originally designed as a Christmas morning breakfast, they double as a crowd-pleasing appetizer for a holiday buffet—or a kid-friendly snack when you know little ones might struggle with the main meal. These festive trees are sure to light up their faces with delight!

Little One’s Version

For toddlers, you can make mini versions because, after all, not every tree grows to the same height. Each bite offers a fun mix of textures and flavours: flaky puff pastry for a festive crunch, savoury ham and cheese for a comforting classic, and a layer of the smooth omelette to tie it all together. It’s a holiday hit that’s as fun to eat as it is to look at!

The Technique

This appetizer is so easy, although here are a few tricks to make sure you get the best result possible:

  • Poke holes in your puff pastry before cooking; it will puff and deform less than the stars.
  • The puff pastry shrinks inside the oven, so ensure the bottom layer is larger than the rest.
  • To cut a good-looking shape, make the egg as flat as possible. If you are not used to making omelettes, check out the Art of Making French Omelette!
  • Cooking the smaller stars takes way less time, so make them apart. Add some cheese on top of some for decoration on the sides.

Variations

I didn’t add mayonnaise between the layers since puff pastry is already rich with butter, but feel free to add it if you like! You can switch things up by adding bologna or omitting the eggs—it’s your call as the chef!

To add crunch and colour, try cutting star shapes from iceberg lettuce. The idea is to layer puff pastry stars into a festive tree shape, letting you choose your favourite layers.

Meet the Christmas Star Puff Tree Appetizer! With layers of star-shaped puff pastry, ham, cheese, and egg, it's a delightful and irresistible addition to your holiday table. Perfect for kids and great for Christmas brunch!

Ingredients

  • 230 g pre-made puff pastry dough
  • 4 slices ham
  • 4 slices cheese or your choice
  • 4 eggs
  • 5 cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp milk or water
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Make multiple star sizes cut through the puff pastry.
  • Cook the larger stars together, brush an egg wash and make holes in them with a fork to prevent deformation. Cook at 180°C (350°F) for 8-10 minutes or until golden.
  • Do the same with the small puff stars; add cheese on top of some and cook for only 4-5 minutes.
  • Crack the eggs in a bowl, mix with the milk, salt and pepper and cook in a non-stick pan until smooth.
  • Make stars of all sizes with eggs, ham and cheese.
  • Assemble by layering all the ingredients into a small Christmas tree, and make smaller ones too.
  • Finish with a half cherry tomato and a wooden stick to hold it in place.
