Easy Air Fryer Apple Turnover

Air Fryer Apple Turnover is easy and fun to make in just half the time than normal ones. It’s a whole apple dipped in spiced-up brown sugar, filled with shaved almonds and covered with pie dough.

Apple season is at its peak, so it’s time to find lovely recipes to use them! This Air Fryer Apple Turnover is easy and breezy to make in the Air Fryer, plus it’s spiced with flagrant cinnamon and nutmeg to keep it autumnal. Simple pie dough replaces the usual flaky dough for a less caloric version. This is a recipe the kids can jump in to help make, and it is easy to decorate as an apple form to make it extra irresistible.

I picked up the idea while visiting a good friend in Morge, Switzerland. He brought me to this bakery, which would do these only once a week, and I couldn’t believe it! It is so simple and delicious, yet you must be far away from home to stumble upon this idea!

The Air Fryer

Air Fryers are mini induction ovens that are usually more energy-efficient than big ovens. If I make significant quantities, I would use the standard oven, but the Air Fryer is faster, easier, and cheaper. Making these Apple Turnovers in the traditional oven would probably take double the time. What a great invention, those Air Fryers!

The Apple Choice

Some apples, like the Red Delicious or Gala, don’t hold well in the heat, but all the others would be fine. The firmest is the green Granny Smith, but its problem is that it’s too acidic. So, more sugar is necessary if you choose to use them. Everything in between is excellent; the apple choice is up to you.

The Filling and Spices

I’ve used the good old brown sugar for this Air Fryer Apple turnover because I love its caramel aroma, but simple white sugar could do, too. I used what I had on hand for the spices, which was the popular cinnamon powder and nutmeg. But you could use a pumpkin spice mix, allspice, cardamom, ginger, whatever you prefer. As for the filling, you could substitute almonds for peanuts, confetti, chocolate, caramel, or even cheese! Again, you are the chef here!

Apple Form

To make the turnover in the shape of an apple, you get a refrigerated round pie dough from the supermarket, cut it into a smaller square around your apple and fold it a corner at a time. Turn the apple over, cut some decorative leaves and stick them to the top. I recommend using your hands to move the freshly covered apples, not to break them up. I also recommend waiting 5-10 minutes until the apples cool down before adding them to the dough; otherwise, the dough might melt and break while you cover them.

Variations

Experimenting with the fillings and toppings can easily add exciting twists to your Air Fryer Apple Turnovers. For a more decadent treat, try adding chilled pastry cream or Nutella to the center before cooking or mixing in some finely chopped, toasted nuts like pecans or walnuts for an extra layer of flavour and satisfying crunch. Once baked to golden perfection, drizzle your warm turnovers with a simple powdered sugar glaze for additional sweetness.

Storage

Store any leftover air fryer apple turnovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat them and regain some of their crispiness, pop them back into the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes, or until warmed through and crispy.

Yes, but wait until they are completely cool before freezing for up to a month.

Yes, but no more than a day or two, then in the fridge.

For apple turnovers, it’s best to use firm, crisp apples that hold their shape well when cooked and offer a good balance of tartness and sweetness. Popular choices include Granny Smith (for a tart kick that balances sweetness), Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala apples.

Absolutely! While designed for the air fryer, these turnovers can be baked in a traditional oven. Preheat your oven to around 400°F (200°C) and bake the turnovers for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and puffed up, and the filling is bubbly. Keep an eye on them as oven times can vary.
